Triumph Repair: Triumph TR6 - Torque Specs, bentley manuals, torque specifications

Question
Hi Howard,
I am rebuilding a late 1960's TR6 engine, and I have not been able to ascertain the torque specifications for the cylinder head 7/16ths UNF thread and tappet settings.  I would be very grateful if you could you assist.

Kind regards
Ernie

Answer
Hi Ernie,

Bentley manuals states 60 to 80 foot lbs on the head and a friend who wrote a book on the specs of British cars states just 60 ft lbs. I use to work on TR-6's and I would not feel good about torquing a head as high as 80 ft lbs, so if it were mine I would stay down around 60 to 65 ft lbs.
Be sure to start in the center and work your way outward. Also, some head gasket companies say that re-torque is not necessary but I am not comfortable with that and I always re-torque after about 500 miles. Be sure the engine is stone cold when torquing and then reset the valve clearance after.

The valve clearance is .010" cold.
