Triumph Repair: tRIUMPH gt 6 dISTRIBUTOR dRIVE GEAR ORIENTATION, triumph gt 6, exhaust stroke

Question
Hi Howard,
I'm working on a 69 triumph gt 6, and don't have a shop manual. Can you tell me the correct orientation 's for teh distributor drive for proper timing. Engine is at top dead cylinder at number one and six. Currently I have the offset toward the engine but the distributor drive is at about 3:30 which puts the rotor at Number 2 cyclinder. Can you teoll me where it ought to be? I thought it should be at number one. It's not my car and on the ditributor caps number one position is at seven o'clock. Thanks JIm

Answer
Hi Jim,

The pistons #1 & #6 should be at TDC But you need to be sure that the # 1 is on TDC of the compression stroke and # 6 is on the exhaust stroke. Then the off set slot should be toward the engine. When you are facing the SIDE of the engine the slots should be pointed at about 1:30 and 8:30.

If you have it that way, it is correct. Now, set the distributor in place and look where the rotor is pointed and check to see that the points have just opened or are about to open. The rotor should be pointed to the # 1 plug pin. If it is not, put #1 plug wire in that position and follow around with the firing order with the rest of the wires (153624)

You can then set the ignition timing to specs and the vacuum unit or units on some distributors should be clear of any thing.
