Triumph Repair: su carb conversion gt6, clearance issues, intake manifold

Question
I have two rebuilt su carbs that I would like to put on a gt6. I purchased a tr6 intake manifold that bolts on fine but is angled up which causes the front carb to hit the bonnet. I am thinking of milling out three aluminum wedges about 7/16 of an inch thick at the top to put between the manifold and the engine. I have clamped everything in place at this angle and there is about 1 and 1/2 inches of clearance between the bonnet and the front carb. I have not read about anybody trying this option and was wondering what your thoughts on this approach are. The carbs are level now with the wedge at the engine and would not be If I simply put the manifold on upside down. Also I do not know if it would pull vacuum as well upside down?  Thank You  Tom

Answer
Tom,

Not sure what your real question is.

The wedges sound interesting.  Still, I'd be more inclined to mod the GT6 manifold to accept the SUs instead.  You know that it'll fit the engine.

Also, in the last part of the question:

"The carbs are level now with the wedge at the engine and would not be If I simply put the manifold on upside down. Also I do not know if it would pull vacuum as well upside down? "

Are you suggesting putting the carbs upside down?  If so, no, that will not work.  Not at all.

As to clearance issues, it'll depend upon which air cleaners you fit.

Cheers,

Jim
