Triumph Repair: 1968 Triumph GT-6 turn signals and flashers, turn signal flasher, flasher units

Question
My Dad has been restoring a GT-6 complete frame off restoration. To this point, body is back on, engine, tranny, suspension etc is together.  Car has been test driven etc.  Both of us are electrical contractors but auto electric is stumping us.  We have the schematics and are following the diagrams but for some reason the turn signals wont function.  He has bought 2 flasher units (non Lucas) but neither work as well as the Lucas unit.
The "B" or "X" terminal on flasher receptacle has 12v but blinkers will not work. We found 2 green wires under the bonnet on firewall near master cylinders but he can't remember a hazard flasher being there.  I jumpered a hot directly from battery to the terminal on flasher receptacle and dash light came on.  We used an ohm meter to test wires from turn signal input/output  (26,27,28) those were ok.  From wires that connect to the output of the turn signal mechanism to the lights were ok.  When I put 12v to the green with brown stripe wire that feeds turn signal we had a slight problem (insulation on wires started to smoke).  I didn't help with the removal of electrical system during the tear down but I don't think it should be this difficult.
the first flasher he installed said blinked with audible sound about 2-3 times then stopped. Installed new flasher and blew fuse.  This is where I came in to give him a hand and see what I could help screw up too!  Now, what about those 2 green wires on the firewall? are those the emergency hazard leads?  Could this be a problem?  Thanks for your help, Kurt

Answer
Hi Kurt,
You need to ID what car you have first because the GT-6 (up to Oct 68) didn't have a hazard switch. Only the GT-6+ had a hazard switch (Oct 68 on). The wiring is different on the two cars. The turn signal flasher on a GT-6 is a three wire unit under the dash on the right hand side and a GT-6+ with a hazard flasher system has the turn signal flasher also under the dash on the right hand side but it is a two wire flasher.
