Triumph Repair: Triumph Repair, Spitfire, shift lever

Question
I have a 1967 Spitfire and am having a trans problem. I was trying to shift into reverse and it feels like I disconnect the shifter from the transmission. Is there any way to reconnect it without dropping the trans or taking trans cover off? If not how do I do it?

Answer
Matt,

The shift lever is held in place in the transmission with some plastic pieces.   With age the plastic parts tend to break, then the shift lever can flop around.

You will need to remove the trans cover in order to replace the parts.   While you're there, not a bad idea to give the trans a quick check for fluid level, nuts and bolts being tight, etc.

Cheers,

Jim
