Triumph Repair: j overdrive, driveshaft shop, splined shaft

Question
i bought a j overdrive to be installed on my TR6 4 speed transmission. i was informed that i would require to change the drive shaft to install the overdrive on my transmission. Is that correct.
Thanks
Daniel

Answer
I don't think so.  From what I can tell, the drive shaft is the same length for either transmission.  If you go to a site, like Victoria British, and look up drive shafts

i.e.

You see that for a spitfire, the OD drive shaft is indeed different than a non-OD car.

When you look the same reference for a TR6 drive shaft, they make no distinction between OD and non-OD

When you install, as long as there is ~1/4-1/2" forward/rear travel in the splined shaft on the drive shaft, which is meant to account for some movement in the drive train, you are OK.

If the drive shaft can't be installed, or allows no forward/rear movement, the driveshaft is too long will bind when driving.

A drive shaft can always be taken to a driveshaft shop, and trimmed to the required length, and rebalanced, if necessary.  The shop can tell you what measurement(s) it needs to make the necessary correction.
