Triumph Repair: 71 Spitfire Differential Noise, bentley manuals, universal joints

Question
I just replaced the front bearing on my 71 Spit.  I now get noise from the Diff at speeds of 35 to 55.  Not much when I have gas applied, but when I decelerate or coast it is extremely noisy.  I counted the number of turns to remove the large nut, could this be caused because It is still loose?  I have checked the fluid and it is topped off.

Answer
I'd have to go through my bentley manuals, and I've not yet rebuilt a differential myself.  I do know that you have to set the front pinion reload & endfloat correctly, and I can only assume that is your problem.  You might want to check the condition of the universal joints just to rule them out, but I believe your problem will lie with the pinion.

Below is a reference I found on others rebuilding their differential.  If you didn't set the preload correctly, you may have to pull it out and re-do.   Hope it helps...
