Triumph Repair: Spit 80 steering column removal, shear bolts, hex head

Question
QUESTION: I am taking the 80 Spit down to the bones and am not sure how to disassemble
the main support for the steering column.  It has no nuts on the top and just
round bottoms.  Is there a trick to this or just get drilling?!?!
Any help would be appreciated -Thanks

ANSWER: HI Chris, there should only be four bolts holding the column to the car. The shear off bolts holding the lock assembly to the column don't have to be removed to remove the column form the car. You can remove the lock assembly by unscrewing the round heads of the sheared off bolts with a small sharp punch and chisel but they are not required to be removed. The shaft can be removed from the lower shaft by unscrewing the lock nut and set screw and two pinch bolts.

QUESTION: Thanks Howard,
I did manage OK to get the steering wheel and shaft out but I am left with the
column and ignition electrics.  In order to paint it I would like this column out
and I must be a bit thick as I do not understand your directions.  I am lost at the
"unscrewing of the sheared off bolts with a sharp punch and chisel".  Please try
to help me clarify my muddification.  Many thanks again.  Chris

Answer
look closely at the bolts that hold the lock assembly to the column and you will not see any hex head on the bolts holding the lock assembly to the column. The are called shear bolts meaning they were tightened until the hex head sheared off. It was an attempt to be an anti theft lock. So the only way to unscrew the broken off bolts is to use a small chisel to unscrew the bolts.
