Triumph Repair: brake master cylinder, brake master cylinder, brake masters

Question
I Jim, I rebuilt my brake master cylinder about 6 weeks ago and now it has begun to start to leak again. I am using castrol lma 4 dot fluid. I want to know if its worth taking apart again and doing another rebuild kit. I used VB parts I remember wondering why the new rubbers I was using looked smaller then the old ones. Would it make any difference if I used a different brand repair kit. Or can a brake master just go bad no matter how many times you rebuild it? Should I just break down and spend the cash for a new one.. Thanks Mark

Answer
Mark,

A lot of the brake rebuild kits these days are coming from one manufacturer in Australia.  I don't know if they're undersizing their seals or it just looks that way as your old seals may have swelled a bit in the brake fluid.

You can try asking the different parts vendors about the source of their rebuild kits in order to find a different set.

Yes, brake masters themselves do wear out.  The bore can wear as it's a soft aluminum alloy.  There are companies that do resleeves on the master cylinders, the question is how the price compares with a new unit.

Cheers,

Jim
