Triumph Repair: shifting problems with a 1976 spitfire 1500 (no overdrive), triumph 1500, haynes manual

I recently went to put my 1976 triumph 1500 in reverse and something has happened and the shifting is all off and I can no longer get it in reverse much less any other gear but third. Since the shifter goes straight into the transmission it can't be linkage, so...? Please some help if possible, I have a Haynes manual but not alot of help!

Actually there is a short linkage on top of the trans.  If you remove the trans cover you'll find the shift lever engages a rod that goes forward to the gearbox cover.  It sounds like possibly the selector fork up on top of the gearbox may be loose.
