Triumph Repair: 1980 Spitfire 1500, robert bentley, spitfire 1500

Question
My carb needs to be rebuilt, two questions Is this a Stromberg Carb or Weber and how difficult is this to do? I have never done it before this will be my first time.

Answer
Bob,

The original carb on the Spitfire is a Stromberg CD variant.

As your car is 26 years old it might have had a Weber fitted.

The Stromberg is a reasonably simple animal but you can't touch the temperature compensator on the side without being extremely cautious.

It'd also help to have the proper needle adjusting tool, otherwise you tend to tear the diaphram when trying to make the adjustment.

The best move is to get a good repair manual (I prefer the Robert Bentley for the Spitfire as it's a reprint of the factory instructions) and review what's involved several times before trying any work.

Cheers,

Jim
