BMW: I dont know if you could..., wheel wells, bmw 325i

Question
I don't know if you could help me because I see that you can answer questions for the e30, so I don't know if you can answer my question. But I don't know where to turn so, if you can't answer my question, then if you know where I can go or who I can ask, I would really appreciate the information.

I own a 2004 bmw 325i I hear such an annoying hum, or high pitched noise, I guess you could call it. It sounds like a siren that is going off, but far away. I brought it to the dealer and they do not know how to fix it. They think it is the fuel pump. But they called BMW's headquarters and they told the dealership that they do not know what to do to fix the problem. But I can't take the noise anymore. It is so annoying and embarrassing. When I have people in the car they ask me what is that sound. It is terrible. This is the first BMW I have owned and I am really not that satisfied at all.

Answer
Maria,
I appreciate you asking me these questions, and I wish I could snap my fingers and fix the problem for you.  Unfortunately the dealership you took the car to probably didn't want to mess with your car.  This is especially true if you didn't buy the car from them.

But you are right, fuel pumps make a noise that is called a "whine", or a "buzzing" sound.  You could have a mechanic replace the pump, although it will probably be ~$200 (guessing) depending on the mechanic and where you live.

You need to determine when the whine is happening.  Is it all the time, or just when the car is rolling?  Is it at a certain speed that it is more apparent?  These are all things that a Mechanic is going to have to know in order to diagnose the problem.  Pay attention to what the car is doing, such as when, how, how often, ambient temperature, engine temperature, engine rpm,....etc.  Also, try and note exactly where the sound is coming from, is it coming from the back seat, engine bay, wheel wells, etc...

If the whining sound is coming from below the back seat, then chances are that it is the fuel pump.  The bearings in these pumps can wear out.  This is with any car, and is not only limited to BMW's.  As a matter of fact, many manufacturers use the same parts in their cars.  Bosch makes the fuel pumps, and Ford, GM, Chrysler, BMW, Volvo all buy this same pump for their vehicles.

If you have any more SPECIFIC information about this noise, then I could possibly help further, but for now this is all I can do!

It's not a hard fix, and it's just a freak occurance in my oppinion.  If you have a warrantee, this should be covered, if not take it to a TRUSTED mechanic and have him check it.

Hope this helps,  Have a Merry Christmas!
