Triumph Repair: 72 spitfire stalls, crane fireball, pvc valve

Question
I've owned my '72 Spitfire 1500 for 20 years. The Problem: It will start up and run fine until I come up to a stop sign, then sometimes it will die unless I keep the engine reved--and not start again. It acts like it is flooded. Hisory: I recently got it out of storage where it had been for the last five years. The engine has less than 1000 miles on an overhaul done prior to storage. Most of the air pollution plumbing (though not the PVC valve) was disconnected 20 years back. What I've tried: New gas filter. Rebuilt the carb, twice! The second time I ordered the bits including the float that don't come in a carb rebuild kit. Years ago when most all cars had carboraters, I rebuilt about 75 total, and I think I did it right. Replaced the breaker point ignition with the Crane Fireball XR700 HEI. I didn't replace the coil, but I have never had one fail like this. Oil change and valve adjustment too. Any suggestions? Thanks! Bob

Answer
Bob it does sound like fuel problems to me too. did you make sure the float level yas right? with carb upside down the back part of the float by the needle is .625 above the carb body. this is while sitting on it's own weight. if you can get it to kill while its still at your house take the fuel line off and check fuel delivery. the pump diaphram propably is dry rotted. also when it does it you could take a sparkplug out and look for wet for flooded or dry for not getting gas. in rare case it might be the fuel tank vent dis connect the line that goes to the carbon canister and try it that way. the carbon can turn into a solid chunk and block air from getting into the tank.try some of this and let mt know.
