Triumph Repair: Changing Points, triumph spitfire mk 4, triumph spitfire mk

Question
Jim,
THX. for the previous advice! Now my new question
I have a 1973 Triumph Spitfire MK.4 1500 Could you take me through the connections of the condenser, coil lead, point spring and earth lead when changing the points and condenser? also is
the earth lead always used?
Thank You,
Richard Ferris

Answer
Richard,

take a look at the diagram for the Mk I-Mk IV on this web page:

I hate to be brief tonight, the typical problem when changing the points is that the movings part of the points needs to be insulated from the base plate.. there are plastic insulators on the pivot post for the points and on the spring retaining bolt.  If you forget the insulator (or short across it) on the spring retaining bolt you won't get spark.

Let me take a look at the rest of your question and see if I can come up with a good answer tomorrow.

Cheers,

Jim
