UK Car Repair: Vauxhall Frontera [ B ]Instrument cluster., vauxhall frontera, wiring loom

Question
My 2001 Vauxhall Frontera has an instrument problem. No instruments, speedo etc.work until I switch on my lights. Can this instrument cluster be reconditioned? Is so,how much would it cost me and where could I get the work done/

Answer
dont have wiring diagram for this car so cant give a specific answer.
Being a 2001 it wont be super complex.

I think the problem may be in the ignition switch!

Follow this:

the lights, whether key is in the ignition or not, when turned on will always bring up the dash lights, and the istrumenty cluster therefore has power, ground and maybe a few signals from speedo etc...

when the key is turned to Acc. or further, the instrument has "normal" power.

If the ignition switch ACC does not connect (but ignition and starter still do) the car will still run but you get no instruments, maybe radio wont work either (does the radio work)

So wiggle the key and bash the column a bit and see if the instruments spring to life, that indicates a worn ignition switch - just thought I'd get that out of the way.

If theres no obvious loose connection in the ignition switch...
You need to check all the under-bonnet, and under dash fuses... Look for the main wiring loom under the bonnet and trace it to the main fusebox under the bonnet, and then find another thick loom that likely goes through thew bulkhead and find the interior fusebox.
It's either a fuse or relay if not the ignition switch- -the fuse box "lid" often has the diagram of what fuse does what on the back of it... look for a speedometer icon and check the respective fuse.

(you should check all the fuses, some fuses do more than one job and theres only room for one picture on the panel...) (yes they could have used a different labelling system but that would involve competence and logic of some sort) (sorry, hard day)
