UK Car Repair: head gasket, head gasket, temperature gauge

Question
hi my rover216si was over heating and going through a lot of water then my heater stopped working then the car just stopped i did not let the car go on the red in the temperature gauge the garage said its my head gasket there is water in my oil and the car is now starting and driving is the head gasket broken and is there a cheaper way to fix this instead of paying over £600 pounds

Answer
When the car stopped running it meant serious overheating had occured.  Unfortunately, when an engine loses water the gauge will not register properly as it cannot sense the water temperature!  To do the work the price is reasonable but make sure they guarantee this will take care of the problem. For instance;   Why did it overheat in the first place?
