UK Car Repair: 1996 rover 216i electrical problem, solenoid starter, rover 216i

Question
When we have power sometimes engine will fire, other times not. When running, runs fine. All the earths have been checked, good battery/ solenoid/ starter, all the basics are good. Is there a common problem you may have heard of?
Im an "old school" mechanic without much comprehension for the modern engine. As i say all the basics have been checked and all seem fine. Hope you can help, its a long walk to work!
Many thanks

Answer
What do you mean, "when we have power sometimes engine will fire" How are you checking for power? and, when you have power to wherever it still doesn't fire up? With modern cars the usual causes are a faulty ignition module, faulty crank or cam sensors.
