UK Car Repair: Vauxhall Astra 1997 Overheating, vauxhall astra, ac condenser

Question
Hello, I recently bought a second hand 97 Astra with about 90,000miles on the clock. I noticed the car was heating up to over 100 as soon as I slowed. I realise my fan is not working. When I stop my car or slow down the fan does not kick in and it immediately heats up from  90 to 100. This leads me to 3 questions. How much to fix a faulty fan, what damaged could have been caused by the previous driver not having this fixed, and lastly, my air-con also does not work - is this linked to the faulty fan.

Answer
I am unsure as to how much it may cost. Damage caused could be huge, but it would have made itself more apparent by now if it was indeed damaged as the head gasket would have blown by now. Yes, the air conditioning condenser is cooled by a cooling fan as well that is controlled by the same fan controller as the radiator fan. It may have overheated the AC condenser and fried out a variety of components. Let the local shop sort it out to get the fans working and leave the AC alone till you need it and then decide if you want to get it fixed.

John
