Volkswagen Repair: 1965 VW convertible, rear view mirror, door hinge

Question
Rick, I inherited my father-in-law's 1965 vw convertible.  Mechanically, OK.  I need to install a passenger side rear view mirror which I ordered and received.  How do I get the door hinge pin out?  I've put creeping oil in and tried banging it out from the bottom with a hammer and pin punch.  Can't seem to get a good angle to punch it out.  Should I remove the door?  Have you ever done one?  Thanks.

Answer
Jim,
You are on the right track, but you may need to use an air hammer to get it to release upwards.  You do not need to remove the door, but make sure it is closed good to relieve lateral pressure on the hinge.  Of course you need a replacement hinge pin with mount, which I assume you already have ordered.
