Volkswagen Repair: Volkswagen 2006 GTI, vw gti, steering wheel

Question
My son owns a 2006 VW GTI-he was driving it last night and accidently ran over a big piece of wood lying in the middle of the road-the steering wheel light on the dashboard came on and the steering wheel locked up; he immediately turned off the car and got out.  He says there was fluid (maybe oil) leaking out-he turned the car back on-and the steering wheel was fine (no longer locked)-of course he didn't try to dirve it-called roadside assistance who came and towed the car to the nearest dealer.  We are assuming the oil pan is damaged-but why would the steering wheel light on the dash come and and why did the steering lock up and then be ok a few mins later?

Answer
Pamela,
It may have been one or more of the ABS sensors tripped(one at each wheel) because of the huge bump.  If you get the car OBD scanned, the error code may still be in the computer, so you can set your mind at ease.  Otherwise, just see if it comes back.
Oh yes, fix the oil pan...
