Volkswagen Repair: Clutch, brake fluid reservoir, air intrusion

Question
I would just like to know, i have a vw golf, i am battling to get the gears changed especially gear 1.  Is it the clutch that has to be replaced or is it the callipers?

Answer
Leanda,
It could be the hydraulic fluid is low.  Have it checked and if it is too low, it should not only be topped off, but it should be BLED also to remove any air intrusion.  Any good mechanic can do this(not just a VW dealership), it should not take long nor be very expensive.
Another cause could be the master and/or slave cylinder o-rings are leaking past.  This is somewhat more complex, but not that difficult to repair.
Calipers are the part of the brakes at the wheels and are not related to shifting problems.  However, on some models the brake fluid reservoir is also used to supply the clutch fluid.  It is designed for the clutch to run dry before the brakes, for safety reasons, so you'll start having clutch problems before the brakes go out!
