Volkswagen Repair: 2000 VW Beetle interior, rubber surfaces, coefficient of friction

Question
I have noticed most of the Beetles we have looked at have the appearance of the
plastic/rubber surfaces breaking down. We have been car shopping for the last
several months and purchased a 2000 Beetle with 100k miles (Silver exterior &
black interior, leather seats). Is there a "fix" for the plastic
surfaces inside the Beetle?

Answer
Hi there, Eddie;
Unfortunately, no there is no permanent solution for repairing the interior surfaces.  It's as if they are treated with a thin layer of "rubber" to increase the coefficient of friction, and once you touch them, and the friction increases, the stuff rubs off.  I just don't get it.  They make it to be "sticky," but they don't make it durable....it's odd.
If it is very bothersome to you, there are several manufacturers of "interior paint."  They will not restore the "sticky" feel, but they will restore the appearance.
I wish I could be more helpful, but even Volkswagen dealers don't have a permanent repair for this.
Good luck, Eddie, I hope this helps a little.
