Volkswagen Repair: 1999 VW Jetta GLS, squirrel droppings, vw jetta

Question
QUESTION: I have new style Jetta. I have two problems with it.
1. The air conditioning/flow stoped working. It does not blow cold nor hot air. After checking and discovering all fuses are good, somehow by removing fuses I have trigered engine light to come on. Which is a second problem.

What do I do.

Thank you.

ANSWER: At between 7, and 8 years old, I would guess the R-134a refrigerant content has fallen below the minimum requirements for operation.  A certain pressure inside the system is necessary, and the small amount of refrigerant isn't enough right now.
The only way to determine the cause of the check engine light is to plug in a scan tool, and get the codes out of the ECM.  I imagine that some thing was pending, and simply illuminated with a change in current flow.  It could be as simple as voltage in the battery is too low.
Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Are you saying that I have to refill the refrigerant?

Answer
Well, yes to start with, I would say the charge in the system is low, but that may just be what is keeping the air from being cool.  It sounds like there are other problems in the ventilation system.  Have you noticed any evidence of rodents under the hood?  Little mouse, or rat, or even squirrel droppings.  They like to nest inside the engine bay of cars, and use the insulation material to nestle into on long winter nights.  They build nests, chew on the wiring insulation, (someone told me once they get some kind of pleasant sensory stimulation from chewing on wiring that has a small current running through them), and also have been found inside the passenger compartment of very few Volkswagens, because they can crawl through the area where the pollen filter is located, at the base of the windscreen, on the right side (passenger side) of the car.  It is further covered up by the rain shield that runs under the windshield wipers.  The heater/air conditioner problem may simply be debris in the way of the vents, or covering up the heater core/evaporator unit which is located within the air plenum that is used to distribute the air to the passenger compartment.
