Volkswagen Repair: Check Engine Light 1995 VW Jetta III, oxnard st, van nuys ca

A very dependable vehicle for sure...
The light came on a week or so ago. It comes and goes daily. Will go out while drivng and come back on. My mechanic changed the distributor pick up according to the code and the light stayed on full time so he put the old one back in. The car was recently tuned and runs great, except for the light. I am noticing slighly reduced gas milage. Any suggestions?

Ed, I need to know what DTC(Diagnostic Trouble Code)came out when you downloaded the fault codes. If it was the Cam sensor, check your timing. Max's German Car located at 15020 Oxnard st Van Nuys CA 91411. I have a whole lot of water-cooled VW parts:1975-2005.
