Volkswagen Repair: Electrical nightmare, oxnard st, van nuys ca

Question
I recently purchased a 1989 Cabriolet Convertible. Is there a relay that has anything to do with the brake light operation? I have checked the bulbs, and replaced the switch under the pedal. We have no electric at the brake lights. The next problem is the head light switch, it operates the parking lights, but you have to play with it and get it just so to make the headlights work. It is the flip back (toggle) type. The horn does not work either. Could these have anything to do with each other? We have also noticed that the odometer only works sometimes, the speedometer always works. Do you have any advice besides taking it in? Which I can't afford right now.
I love the car, and it drives great. Thanks, Tammy

Answer
First of all the speedometer-odometer assembly has nothing to do with the electrical system. It sounds like you need another assembly or fix yours, or replace the cable. Did you check your fuses? The light switch is probally broken and you need another one. Check the ground wires in the back of the car that ground the tailight assembly. They ground on the side in front of the tailights inside the trunk. You probally have three seperate problems. the horn usually doesn't work because the ground to the steering rack is broken. That is four seperate problems. Or maybe the horn switch on the steering wheel is broken or not properly installed. I am Max's German Car located at 15020 Oxnard st Van nuys Ca 91411
