Volkswagen Repair: VW Golf dependability, vw golf gl, oxnard st

Hi.  I am looking into buying a 1996 VW Golf gl, but don't know
much about these cars.  It already has 140,000 miles on it, and I
am curious as to how long these cars can normally go?  I need a car
that's going to be dependable for awhile.  Any advice you can give
me would be fully appreciated.  Thanks!

If the car has been taken care of, they are very dependable car. Ask for service records. Otherwise do an inspection of the Golf before you buy it. Make sure it doesn't overheat and the trans operates properly. If it is an auto, you may want to service the trans if you buy it. There is no trans dip stick on 1996 and later VWs auto trans. If you lack the expertise, take it to a mechanic to check out. It is worth the $65. Sometimes a car will run good cold, but when it gets hot, it starts to run badly. Make sure you take it for a long test drive or let it idle for several minutes until the radiator fan engages. I am Max's German Car located at 15020 Oxnard st Van Nuys CA 91411.
