Volkswagen Repair: VW Starting problem, autowatch immobiliser, neutral safety switch

Question
I have recently purchased a 1.8 8v 1989 non injection Golf Gti Cabrio Clipper Karmann. It had been standing for a year and would not run although had been going well before it was parked up. When you turn the key you hear various clicks from relays and a black box marked 11724 with a VW Audi badge on it which is under the dash. But the starter does not turn. I have checked the starter by running cables to it and it cranks the engine but has not yet fired. The car was, until this afternoon fitted with an autowatch immobiliser but I removed this so I could eliminate it from the equation. I'm now completely stumped, I have a feeling the ominous black box may be the root of my troubles but I have been unable to find out exactly what it is... some kind of starter unit/ecu? Maybe there's just a hidden fuse somewhere that's gone, but I've been unable to find it. All the ones in the box are good. Any suggestions at all would be really appreciated as I'm beginning to loose my temper with it!

Many thanks, Tom

Answer
If it is a automatic maybe your neutral safety switch is bad. Or maybe your ignition switch is bad. Are you sure that when you disabled the alarm you didn't mess up the wiring for the ignition? If this is an after market alarm, you definitely have to reconnect the starter wire.
