I HAVE 1776CC ENGINE/W 110 CAM, WND 1.25 ROCKER ARMS. I HAVE DONE ALL THE ENGINE WORK, BUT I'M HAVINHG PROBLEMS WITH THE PUSH RODS THAT I CUT. I AM NOT SURE IF I CUT THEM TO THE RIGHT LENTH TO WORK CORRECTLY BECAUSE WHEN I FIRE THE ENGINE IT WON'T IDLE NOR STAY ON AT ALL. PLEASE I'LL TAKE ANY SUGESTIONS TO HELP ME FIX MY PROBLEM. MY CAR IS 1960 VW, TYPE I WITH SUPERSTREET TRANS{3.88 RING & PINION, STOCK 1ST- 3RD GEAR AND A 0.89 ON 4TH} last Q? is it better a 4.12 or a 3.88 ring & pinion for highway & street?
Answer -
Max, thank you for your question.    If the engine tries to start and backfires then the push rods are too short.  But in your case it sounds like they could be too long.  You would be far better off by getting either adjustable push rods (cant guarantee the longevity of them) or a rocker arm geometry kit and measuring tool (best). That kit can be bought through MidAmerica Motorworks (800-500-1500)(http://www.mamotorworks.com) the kit is used for custom rocker setups like yours.
Hope that helps

Max, thank you for your second question.  Stock in 1960 (1200cc) was 4.375 for the final (fourth) gear.  It was changed in 1966 (1500cc) to 4.125 and changed again in 1970 (1600cc) to 3.80.  So, a 3.88 should be fine for a 1776.  But this will depend on your driving habits and the kind of driving done, like stop and go traffic or highway, interstate. The 3.88 will lower the rpm of the engine, slightly, whereas the 4.12 will give a slightly higher top end but may also lower the fuel economy.
Hope that Helps

hello again i have another quetion? now my car starts but it turns off right away, i move the time set to sevral positions but only when i retard the timing it starts right away but it won't stay on and it feels like if there is something too tight, also when i press the clutch padel it feels like the engine has no power, any ideas what it might be!!!
a] flywheel nut b] wrong timing marks c] pressure plate too strong 1,700lb kennedy
anything would halp!!!!!!!!?

Answer
Max, thank you for your question.  You could have a problem with insufficient fuel pressure, insufficient air flow or too much air flow.  There can also be a vacuum leak in the intake manifold.  If you are running dual carbs both have to be set or tuned separately then hook up the equalizer tube.
Hope that helps
