Volkswagen Repair: VW Jetta repair question, brake warning light, jetta gls

Question
Hi Don.  We have a 2000 Jetta GLS, and the brake warning light just recently came on.  It remains on and beeps continually as we drive, but the beeping stops when we come to a complete stop. The owner's manual suggests the brake fluid level is low, but that wasn't the case.  I filled up the reservior just to be safe, but the brake warning light still came on and beeped. The emergency brake is not engaged, so I can't figure out the problem.  Any idea what could be wrong?  Thanks for your input Don!

Answer
Brad, Thank you for your question.  The brake warning light can come on due to low fluid level (like the manual says) but also low pressure, master cylinder failing, brake calipers failing, and clogs in the brake lines. Plus a couple of others.  In ABS systems, the light will also come on when the pump for the ABS is not working properly; the controller may be messing up, too.  The beeping until stop could very well be the abs system is not working properly.  That would not surprise me in the least. Can also be water in the lines,.  Best thing to do (as long as you are not under warranty) is to go to a good brake shop and have then checked out fully. Just to let you know, the average brake job goes for $250 to $800.
Hope that helps
