Volkswagen Repair: LEAKING AND BAD SHIFTING, shaft seal, vw bug

Question
I HAVE A 1976 VW BUG CONVT. 1600 CONVERTED TO CARB.  THERE IS ABOUT 80K ON THE MOTOR.  IT HAS BEEN LEAKING AFTER STOPPING WHEN WARM.  I CHECK THE MOTOR OIL LEVEL AND ITS FINE.  IT IS NOW SHIFTING STIFFLY AND IM WONDERING IF ITS THE TRANS GEAR OIL LEAKING.  IF IT IS DO I NEED TO DROP THE MOTOR.

Answer
Scott, Thank you for this question.  There is a difference in the smell of transmission and engine oil.  by what you are describing, it is a very good possiblity that the transmission nose cose seal, pilot shaft seal, or O - rings on either side of the output drive shafts are leaking.  in either case you will have to drop the engine, except for the output shafts.  to do either of these seals, it is best to have the Bentley manual for 1970 - 1979 Type 1.
hope that helps
