Volkswagen Repair: 88 VW Jetta sputtering, fuel pump filter, vw jetta

Question
I am located in the fridged conditions in Canada and 2 days ago my car wouldn't start even with a boost. It would just turn and turn without firing. Finally I replaced the battery with a new one which had 1000CCA and it fired. Now the problem is that after idling for about 5 minutes the car begins to sputter and burns oil (exhaust is black). I try to drive but it won't accelerate even though I have the pedal to the floor. Could it be the fuel pump, filter or something else ? Any comments is much appreciated

THANKS

Answer
John,
I don't do much with Jettas but usually black exhaust smoke is a result of an over rich condition (too much gas). The other battery might have started the car if the plugs were not being flooded. It's hard to say without actually checking things but I'd be looking at the "cold start system". I hope that helps!
