Volkswagen Repair: VW Jetta - Check Engine Light, vacuum leak, vw jetta

The check engine light remains on.  The car has been in for service several times and without fail, the light goes back on.

I am now told that this is due to the idle being too high compared to the factory specs and that there is nothing else wrong with the car.

In fact, when you first start the car it starts right up with the RPM around 1100.  Within 30 secs the lights dim (check engine light dims as well) for a second or two.  This may repeat several times, however once the car is running for a couple of minutes the dimming does not occur and the RPM is around 900 - 1000.

Any help as too how to begin to determine the cause would be much appreciated.

John,

I don't know what engine you've got... you forgot to tell me.  You can still check your ground connections to the cylinder head.  Let me know the milage on your car as you may need an O2 sensor.

You should also know that VW engine lights drive owners crazy, because any little fault will set them off.  But I think your's is justified because of the hunting idle.

Good Luck,

Paul

Paul,

Thank you.  It's a 1998 Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0L.  Mileage 97,850
At one point the Dealer wanted to replace the Throttle Body?   Any thoughts.

Answer
John,

You're due for an O2 sensor, check you maintance book.

Thottle body? I'm not sure why they would want to do that... is there a vacuum leak?

Make sure you check the brown ground wires to the head, for bad connections.

Good Luck,

Paul
