Volkswagen Repair: 1996 Jetta GLS Windhield Wiper Problem, vw jetta, wiper shaft

Question
I have a 1996 VW Jetta GLS.  My windshield wiper fuse is constantly blowing. Lately, I put in a new fuse and within a minute it blows. I have noticed on occasion a little puff of smoke coming from the steering column and I am wondering if that might be related. If not, what other things might be causing the fuse to blow?

Answer
Avik,

VW has a problem making wiper shafts that work.  The wipershaft assembly will need to be replaced (part is approx $100 cdn).

The smoke from the steering column is usually the result of dust, smoking from the increased current draw.

If you want to repair the shafts yourself the wiper arms need to be removed and the plastic cover under them as well.

Then remove the entire assemby with motor.  Install your old motor onto the new assembly.

Try moving the old wiper shaft arms. Compare them to the new arms... that's why the fuse blew.

Good Luck,

Paul
