Volkswagen Repair: 98 Volkswagen wont crank with ignition, starter solenoid, fuse box

Question
1998 Jetta VR6 5spd. When I turn the ignition to run it won't turn over. I've been having to jump the starter with a wire to turn it on. Does it have a relay? or fuse? owner's manual doesn't state. Or starter solenoid, if so then it shouldn't start with the wire right?
Thanks. Joe

Answer
If you are sure that is not your battery the list is quite long what it else might be the easy ones are
- loose connection on the starter or battery
- excess battery corrosion
- ignition switch
- clutch switch
- fuse

I am guessing since it starts by jumping the starter its either the ignition switch or the clutch safety switch.  I am not sure if there is a fuse or not, you should look at the panel that covers the fuse box, it will have a list of fuses.

Good Luck,
Ryan
