Volkswagen Repair: Brake light switch, brake light switch, jetta gls

Question
Hi. My question is this. I have a 2000 Jetta GLS automatic and I now can't get the darn thing out of park.  In August 2002 I had the same problem and the dealership replaced a brake light switch because they said it was shorted. I'm pretty sure that this is the same problem.  Unfortunately money is real tight right now and I'm not in the mood to be taken for a ride by the dealership. It has happened too many times before. Is this a simple fix that my husband and I could accomplish with some help or do I have to suck it up and take it in?  It has done this periodically, but after a few minutes it usually does come out of park.  Now is just won't budge even when putting full force on the brake.  Any insight would honestly be appreciated.

Answer
It is interesting that that was the solution.  I would have never have gone there.  Which makes me suspect that that was not entirely true on their part.  BUT I have minimal experience on automatics.  If you can spend a bit more time on the net I will give you the web site address to where there are "owners" of VW's and also a number of VW mechanics.  Register there and post your question again(((I do not get anything to tell you of this site --I am suggesting this site because it is a good site and you are more likely to find your answer there)))  website is http://www.vwvortex.com     It is a free site   LOL
