Volvo Repair: ignition problem, volvo dealership, s80 volvo

Question
Good Afternoon.  I have a general question.  I have a 2001 S80 Volvo.  A few weeks ago the ignition stopped working.  I took the car to a mechanic other than a Volvo mechanic (lesson #1).  Essentially they replaced the ignition from one they ordered from Denmark.  When I picked the car up from the shop it was already running.  When I got home and then wanted to go somewhere, it wouldn't start....nothing but silence.  I called the mechanic and he said the battery went dead while they had it in the shop (five weeks) so I needed to replace the battery.  So I did.  And still nothing happened.  So I had it towed to a Volvo dealership and it took them less than an hour to program the keys.  It seems like this should have already been done and when I asked the original garage, they said it was because the battery had been taken out.  So my question...is that possible?  Can the removal of the battery cause the communication between the ignition (key) and the starter to stop working?  I had never heard that before and maybe it's a HUGE coincidence but it seems like the original garage didn't complete the job.  thanks!  Doug
