Volvo Repair: Diesel Fuel, 1985 mercedes 300d, rounds rock

Question
I just bought a 1985 Mercedes 300d that was parked for 3 years.  Although it starts and runs good, I was told by the previous owner that the diesel fuel that is in it whas been in it for three years.  It is almost full.  I have been told I should drain the fuel and change the filters and install new fuel.  Should I simply drain it thriough the drain plugh on the bottom or will I need to trake the tank off and do more than simply drain, install new filters and new fuel. I know you are in Volvo Repair, however, I know your expertise will cover anty diesel automobnile.  Thank You

Answer
AWwwwwww.. MB's. I kinda miss them but not the diesels! Just pull the plug on the tank and drain. put the plug back in. Add three or four gallons clean fuel and repeat intil it comes out looking like what you are pouring in. It may take several rounds. Rock/shake the car when the fresh fuel is in it befire draining. Remove the filters and disconnect the injector lines. Back blow thenm away from the injectors with compressed air. Do that for all line sections. I fyou have to blow into the tank redrain that. Drain the injection pump too. ANY dirt/sludge in those injectors and you are buying a set. Additionally re-blow the lines out with carb. cleaner and dry with shop air. Fill the tank. Fill all filters w/fuel and install. Prime the pump, and good luck. priming the pump is probably the biggest trick. It should have a hand pump on it to help you out.
The only good news here is that she was stored with the tank full. That's your "best" chance of recovering her.
