Volvo Repair: 2004 S60 Volvo Radiator Flush, radiator flush, coolant level

Question
I have  2004 S60 with 65,000 miles and was told when having the oil changed by a national speedy chain that I need a radiator flush. Is this necessary or can I add coolant directly to the radiator myself if the coolant level is low? Can a running hose through the radiator work if I want to clean out what is left in the radiator?

Answer
Mark, Yeah of course they are going to try to sell you something you probably dont need.  You dont need a flush.  You can do a drain and fill yourself and if you want to run the hose through the bottle with the drain cock open that will give you the same effect.  The trick is filling.  Take 1 gallon of not mixed coolant and put half in the resevoir.  Now fill the coolant jug with water.  Now you have  a 50/50 blend.  Whatever is left then top off with water.  Fill it slowly.  You will need to drive the car, then top off as necessary.  Roger
