Question
i was driving and heard a whining sound in the engine. i pulled over after about 20 minutes to check it out.  then a lot of blue smoke started coming out of the tailpipe. i shut it off, pulled all the plugs, the front cylinder had a lot of soot and the others had soot on one side.  there was also oil leaking out of the turbocharger. I think I need a new turbocharger.  question is, how difficult a job is this?  what do i need to do to change it? the dealership says it's a 5 hour job. are any special tools required?  is it possible the broken turbo did any additional damage to other parts of the engine?  Also, i could get my turbocharger rebuilt or buy a rebuilt or used one.  Any guidance as to which way I should go??

Answer
Jeff, first check all the intercooler hoses for holes to rule that out.  some oil will leak out of the turbo but shouldnt be a lot.  5 hour job?  Sure, to make money thats what they will charge.  If you have a Mitsubishi Turbo on it, an hour or so tops.  A garret would take longer because the manifold would have to come off.  You wont damage anything else but car will be sluggish as hell.  There are deals on Ebay for brand new Turbos.  A rebuild Turbo is an option.  We have used Turbo City before and they do good work. Any other questions, let me know.  Roger
