Volvo Repair: 91 Volvo 240 Parasitic drain, damsel in distress, center vents

Question
QUESTION: I read your answer on a 93 240 with a constant chime and a dead battey.  Here is my data 1991 240, damsel in distress, Chime in the glove box, no bulb in the dome light and a new battery dead.  There is a .25 amp parasitic drain on fuse #8. That drain will disappear if the battery is didconnected for a few seconds. I can hear a relay click and when i reconnect the drain is gone.  Until I open a door. It remains until I disconnect the battery again.  QUESTIONS  1 is it a  defective Interior Light relay or is the some other factor that would cause it to stay engaged?  2. Where the heck is it? Harold in Kansas

ANSWER: Harold, its one of the power lock relays that is giving you the problem.  Its behind the center vents.  you need to take the glovebox out and remove the duct work to access the relays.  There may be a broken wire in the drivers door harness as well.  I would start with the relay first.  Roger

QUESTION: I didn't include the door lock data because they all work as expected.  I did put a test light on the dome light which drew another .5 amps {total .75, Less then I would expect the correct bulb))  The dome light would glow for a couple of seconds and then snap on. Are we still looking at the door locks?   Harold in Kansas

ANSWER: Harold, thats fine but Ive never seen one of those go bad.  You can pull the dome light down and disconnect it and see if it still draws.  The relay for the dome light may be the culprit.  I understand that the locks work but you mentioned one clicking.  I would try the relay first.  Ive never had to change one of those either and Ive been doing this a while.  I would  have to look it up to even know where it is.  Roger

QUESTION: Let's go one more round on this thing and call it good.I was hoping for "Oh yes they die all the time" I have pulled the #8 fuse and that has "fixed" the drain but of course all the courtsy features are gone.  The dome light has been pulled because it is on all the time after the battery is reconnected and a door has been opened. It can be shut off by the dome light switch but the drain is still there. The chime is in the glove box because (Iam assuming) because it would chime all the time. If I know where the Interior light relay was, maybe by locating the click, I chould sepertate the door relays from the dome light relays.   Thankyou for your patience.  I have had Two rules I have tried to follow.  Don't work on Damsels cars. Work on only domestic cars. This one belomgs to a relative.  Harold in Kansas

Answer
Harold, sorry but these cars are bricks and are the most reliable of the Volvo line.  Not sure why the chime is in the glove box.  Chime should be located by your foot area above the accelerator.  I would follow the click and if you need the damsel to help you connect the battery while you are inside the car, that might help.  Good luck.  Roger
