Volvo Repair: crank carrier seal, volvo xc, crankshaft seal

Question
QUESTION: Trying to sell my 2001 volvo xc v70 awd.  A buyer brought it to a mechanic ( doesn't specialize in foreign or volvo )  they said i have a leak above the oil pan - crank carrier seal??? something.  They say motor needs to be pulled to fix but since it has 104,000k miles - it's not worth it -

ANSWER:    Crankshaft seal and carrier seal should be done at the same time. Unfortunately, it's very common and very expensive. Bummer. 104k is nothig for that vehicle. She'll go a lot longer than that.

QUESTION:  All we've had is a very slow oil leak. Does it really need to be replaced??  Can you keep running it and just add oil from time to time?  What is the price to fix all?
thanks

Answer
There is the danger of a fire hazard. If the exhaust is hot enough, IE: 4 hour freeway driving, it could ignite the oil and burn down the house.
I believe it is a 10-12 hour job at the prevailing rate. @  $1k most places. The parts cost is minimal. Under $50.00. You do need, read (should have) the proper fixtures (specialty tools) to do this job correctly. I've seen some hacks do it without them, and it had to be redone a short time later. Kind of like performing surgery with only a rusty pen knife. VBG
Your options suck. Do the work, then sell the car and probably cannot recover your expense. Reduce the price of the vehicle to cover the cost of repairs and eat it.
Or... if you do not have any morals, wait for a buyer that is too stupid to have it checked out first? They are, unfortunately, a dime a dozen. HTH
If it's any consolation, just consider the repair part of your cost per mile while you owned the vehicle.

With sympathy,

Mark
