Volvo Repair: 50,000 maintenance, bridgestone dueler, scare tactic

Question
We recently purchased a 2005 XC90 AWD 2.5 and I want to keep it for many years. The warranty expires in 200 miles. I have read that we should keep using Volvo oil (synthetic?) and have the transmission fluid changed at 50k with a quality alternate (Volvo only uses there's under warranty). The dealer is 1 1/2 hours away but does seem to be a good one. What do you recommend for overall maintenance on this vehicle? We did have the brakes gone thru by Volvo, the wheel bearings were replaced in the past and it has Bridgestone Dueler H/L tires. Thanks Dave

Answer
Dave, my memory is that the 60,000 mile service is the big one. There is no 50k service. (A possible ploy from the dealer for that last in warranty(scare tactic) service?) Consult your owner's manual or go online with Volvo. In any event. The trans. service IS important to have done. Any quality synthetic oil is fine for engine or trans. Does NOT have to be Volvo. But the Volvo stuff is as good as any. Just keep in mind that they buy it from someone else. They do NOT manufacture their own. They just re-brand it.
