Volvo Repair: 1995 volvo 850 turbo wagon, volvo 850 turbo wagon, coolant levels

Question
QUESTION: Hi there- my coolant light is coming on intermitantly. intially i only noticed it come on for a second or two when the engine was cold and only on the first sharp right hand turn. The light would go off after a second or two. this happened consisitantly for about 10 days. My husbnad replaced the thermostat after checking the coolant levels. But light still comes on. Car never indicates that it is overheating. Last night the light came on when I accelerated from a stop without turning. The light turned off for a few seconds. Today it came on and stayed on for about 10 seconds. Could there be a loose belt or loose mount? Radiator was replace about a year ago. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Lori, More likely its the coolant level sensor but I would have the coolant system pressure tested to see if there are any leaks that cant be seen unless the system is pressurized.  Roger

QUESTION: Thank you so much for your response. Is the coolant level sensor something easy to replace? I have spent thousands of dollars in repairs for this car in the 2 years I have owned it. Would like to have my husband replace the sensor and see if that solves the problem. We don't have repair manual. Is there one you recommend? Can we do it ourselves.

Answer
Lori, that sensor takes a whole 2 minutes to replace.  Pull up on the resevoir and your will see the sensor underneath the bottle.  The rest is pretty easy.  Pop the old one out and put a new one in.  The only book that I like is Bentley's.  The rest are toilet paper.  The best manual is the factory manuals but are very costly.  Roger
