Volvo Repair: 1998 Volvo S70 (108,000 mi) stalls while sitting idling in traffic, mechanic shop, volvo dealer

Question
This situation has been going on for about 3 weeks. The car drives fine, but has suddenly died 8 times in 7 days. It is only while sitting at a stoplight, stop sign, or idling in traffic, never while moving. I live in Los Angeles, this is a very dangerous situation as the first time it happened, I had pulled out into the intersection & waited for oncoming traffic to stop so I could complete my left turn. I had no idea if the car would start or not. It did, but the car behind me was honking. The 8th & last time it did it to me, it took 7 times for the car to start. I took it to the private mechanic shop that has been working on my car for the last 2 years & after having the car for 3 days, they were stumped & told me to take it to the dealer for diagnosis. It's the dealer that I have used for awhile, so they know the car. It has now been at the Volvo dealer for 6 days & they are stumped also. They told me that they cannot diagnose the problem until it stalls on them. In thinking back, it has usually stalled after having been driven about an hour or more. I don't know if this is important, but the ABS light has been coming on occasionally in the last 3 weeks, then goes off. Do you have any thoughts why this car is doing this and what it could be? I'd appreciate any input you could give me.

Answer
Karen, with any diagnostic problem it is difficult to find the problem unless the car is doing it for the tech.  To me it can be a few things.  Fuel pump imtermittently having problems, or a cam sensor but it is hard to tell.  I wouldnt want to guess either.  As far as the ABS, Its ususally the control module that is starting to fail.  I would let the dealer keep it a few more days and see if they can get it to do something.  Roger
