Volvo Repair: Volvo 850Gt Trubo 1997, single mom, trubo

Question
I am about to purchase a 1997 4 door Volvo Turbo. It is used and I like the car. It is great condition. My friend girl went online and researched and said this model has had some recalls and not to buy. But honestly I been car looking and nothing else is better...is this car worth buying? previous owner took good care of the car and it has 110k miles. Any other problems please advise. Single mom here.

Answer
The first thing you need to know is whether the timing belt has been changed. It will likely fail soon after 100k miles if not replaced, and cause major engine damage. I just finished changing one myself on a 2001 S80. You should also make sure the tensioner and idler pulleys for the timing belt were changed, as well. I don't know as much about the '97 model, but I know the 2001 S80 has multiple problems with the electronics. I personally would not recommend it.
