Volvo Repair: 1985 Volvo 740 GLE rear lights, volvo 740 gle, double filament

Question
Hi - I have a question about the rear lights on my 1985 Volvo 740 GLE.  The tail lights and brak lights all work fine.  My problem is that the tail lights (outside bottom lights in the assembly) are much brighter than my brake lights.  It's a double filament bulb... when the lights are on and I step on the brake -- you can't see any change in the brightness but if you're close enough -- about 2 ft -- and looking directly at them, you can see that both filaments light up.  Is this a common problem in the older Volvo's?  Nothing is malfunctioning ... it's just that my brake lights are invisible!  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Seth, its the actual taillight assemblies that are bad.  If you take the bulb and look in the hole, you will see mold or goo in there.  common issue for all volvos.  The only thing you can do is try to clean them but its better to just replace the units. Roger
