Volvo Repair: igntion switch cant unlock gear from park, volvo 850 gle, electrical portion

Question
QUESTION: Hello.  I have this problem for a few months and it keeps getting worse.  When I try to start the car with the key in the ignition, the ABS light comes on and I can't get my gearshift to come out of park, it locks it (auto trans).  I have to wiggle the key in the ignition and then the ABS light goes off and then I can release the gearshift out of park.  What do I need to replace or if I can get it repaired and can I keep my same set of keys or I have to get an additional set?  Thank you for your help.

ANSWER: You may be able to replace just the electrical portion of the switch. What year and model is it?

QUESTION: Sorry, I forgot to tell you, is 1995 Volvo 850 GLE wagon.  This electrical portion is different to key lock & tumbler?  Can I do this myself?
ANSWER: Does the ABS light ever go out? Does it always go out and then the car will shift after wiggling key. It could be a coincidence and you have multiple problems. The shift lock switches go bad frequently.Ignition switch (electrical portion) is a relatively easy repair.Located in steering column.Remove four screws to remove the cover, unplug the ignition switch remove two screws that hold in the ignition switch, remove switch, reverse to install) Pick up a manual for more details (check the library)

QUESTION: Yes, the ABS light goes out after I wiggle the key.  I had the Position Neutral switch on the transmission replaced about 2 years ago.  Is the shift lock switch you mentioned the same?

Answer
Yes, shift lock is different than gear selector switch. Shift lock is located by shifter. I have removed many of these units, the draw back is you can move the shifter out of park without having your foot on the brake. But it does sound like the ignition switch is bad
