Volvo Repair: A/C doesnt work., stop leak, engine compartment

Question
I just bought a 1996 850. The owner told me the dealer said $1700 to fix it, but they were unsure of the problem.  This is my first Volvo, so I have no clue on where to start. Could you tell me where to look to add freon or where to check the level. Thank you!

Answer
Probably a leaking evaporator. The fill valve is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment. The only way to check the level is by attatching gauges, that will give you an approximate amount. The system should be evacuated, vacuum checked, and pressure tested. Stay away from "stop leak" additives.
