Volvo Repair: Volvo V70 5spd, worse case scenario, front wheel bearings

Question
I have a v70 newly purchased, that has developed a nosie that seems to eminate from the transmission, or specifically when the clutch is in use or changing gears. the sensation is not just auditory but also a physical vibration you can feel through the steering wheel. As if the clutch is slipping, but doesn't seem to correlate to any loss in immediate power. It is an intermittent problem, but most often occurs in first gear from a stop or launching or when down shifting to decelerate. I have tried to duplicate by applying the emergency brake and releasing the clutch slowly to sense any slipping but nothing. Car drives fine, just has this issue. The serpentine belt seems tight. The noise is akin to dragging a piece of furniture across a wood floor.

Answer
I'm inclined to think the steering wheel vibration is a separate issue from the noise you are hearing.Although not ruling out a correlation. Its quite possible that a warped flywheel could be the source, loose springs in the friction plate, throwout bearing, and worse case scenario an internal bearing in the transmission. I would check the front tires for out of round and balance. You didn't indicate how long you've had the car or how many miles you've put on it...If the car has been sitting on a dealer lot, not getting driven alot, rust will build up on all the machined surfaces (brake discs & flywheel for example)and as that surface rust is worn off there will be a period of adjustment (noises and smells) they should dissipate quickly(2-3 days tops).Do you have a service history of the car? How many miles are on it? Has the clutch ever been replaced?Did you have the car inspected before purchase to prioritize the vehicles needs? If not, a thorough inspection of the vehicle should be done.Paying close attention to front wheel bearings, tie rod ends, and ball joints (all high failure components)
