Volvo Repair: 98 Volvo V70 AWD sputters, stalls, loses power, volvo v70 awd, 1998 volvo v70

Question
Tonight my 1998 Volvo V70 AWD Wagon sputtered and eventually stalled. It did this 3 or 4 times on my 15-20 mile drive.

It does have an exhaust leak, which I was planning to fix as soon as I had enough cash to fix it. Didn't think it was a huge deal, as the car ran fine -- minus a slight loss of power.

Check Engine Light came on yesterday, remains on now. The "Service" light also illuminated after stalling, but went off as soon as the car started running fine again.

These problems started soon after getting gas, so when I got home I tightened the gas cap (it was fairly loose...in Oregon we can't pump our own gas...so the attendant must not have twisted it tightly) and then drove about 20 miles to see if it would stall anymore.

The light remained on after tightening cap, but the car ran fine.

Having A/C on occasionally seems to aggravate this problem.

Also, RPM meter stays above zero even when idling. Not sure if this is normal or associated to this problem.

Should I bring it in to the mechanic now? Or is it safe to wait? I am doing a lot of driving this weekend, and am thinking it would probably be best to have it serviced sooner rather than later.

Answer
Ben, that gas cap can cause that but Im going towards a intermittent airmass meter issue.  I would clean the throtle body and see if the Tach goes up a bit. Check engine and service light would have to be scanned and reset.  Service light will go out after 3 minutes.  I have never heard of a State of where you cant pump your own gas.  They must still think its the 50's there. HA.  Take it to your Volvo shop and have them check it out for you anyway.  Better safe than sorry.  Roger
